Chinese metaphysics has two great birth-chart systems, and people mix them up constantly. BaZi (八字, the Four Pillars of Destiny) and Zi Wei Dou Shu (紫微斗数, ZWDS, Purple Star Astrology) both start from the same input: your birth date, hour and gender. From there they diverge completely. They were developed by different schools, they run on different machinery, and they are good at different questions. Neither is the better chart. They are different instruments pointed at the same life.
A useful way to hold the difference: BaZi tells you the weather of your life, ZWDS gives you the floor plan of the house you live it in.
A BaZi chart writes your birth moment as eight characters: one heavenly stem and one earthly branch each for the year, month, day and hour. The stem of your day is your Day Master, the element that stands for you. The whole reading is then a study of pressure and support: which of the five elements strengthen your Day Master, which drain it, and how the ten-year luck pillars and annual pillars keep shifting that balance. BaZi excels at timing and climate. It will tell you which decade carries momentum, which years ask for patience, and which elements, and by extension industries, seasons and environments, work in your favour.
A Zi Wei Dou Shu chart takes the same birth data and plots a wheel of twelve palaces, one for each domain of life: self, siblings, marriage, children, wealth, health, travel, friends, career, property, fortune and parents. Fourteen major stars and a supporting cast of minor stars settle into these palaces, and the Four Transformations (四化) mark where prosperity, power, recognition and obstruction concentrate. Where BaZi compresses your life into an elemental equation, ZWDS spreads it out room by room. That makes it unusually specific: the marriage palace speaks about your marriage, the career palace about your work, and the palaces answer each other across the wheel.
BaZi: Eight characters: the stem and branch of your birth year, month, day and hour. No stars, no palaces.
ZWDS: A wheel of 12 palaces populated by 14 major stars and dozens of minor ones, plotted from the same birth data.
BaZi: The five elements. Everything reduces to how wood, fire, earth, metal and water push against your Day Master.
ZWDS: The palace. Each life domain (marriage, career, wealth, health) has its own room with its own stars to read.
BaZi: Climate questions: when is my strong decade, which years favour career moves, what element supports me.
ZWDS: Floor-plan questions: what is my marriage actually like, how do I earn, where does the recurring friction live.
BaZi: Diagnostic and elemental. Often ends in remedies: colours, industries, directions that balance your chart.
ZWDS: Narrative and specific. Reads like a profile of the person, domain by domain, cycle by cycle.
BaZi: Ten-year luck pillars and annual pillars interacting with the natal eight characters.
ZWDS: Ten-year Da Xian palaces and annual Liu Nian overlays, each firing its own Four Transformations.
Both, ideally, because they cross-check each other. But if you have to start somewhere: start with BaZi when your question is about timing or element balance, and start with ZWDS when your question is about a specific domain of life. If you are asking "when should I make my move", that is BaZi territory. If you are asking "what is going on in my marriage" or "why does money arrive and then leave", the ZWDS palaces will give you a far more textured answer. Practitioners in Singapore, Malaysia, Taiwan and Hong Kong routinely keep both charts side by side for exactly this reason.
One practical note for either system: the birth hour matters. BaZi loses a quarter of its pillars without it, and in ZWDS the hour decides where your Life Palace sits, which shapes the entire wheel. Find your birth time before you take any reading seriously.
