The Four Transformations四化 · the moving engine of ZWDS

Star placements are fixed at birth. The Four Transformations are what move. Every one of the ten heavenly stems transforms four specific stars, and stems arrive from three directions: your birth year fixes the natal set for life, each decade brings its own stem, and every calendar year brings another. Reading ZWDS is largely the craft of watching these three layers land on the same twelve palaces.

生年四化Natal layer

Set by your birth year stem, permanent. These four marks describe the standing themes of the life: where things flow, where you push, where you are known, and where the recurring lesson lives.

大限四化Decade layer

Each ten-year period carries the stem of its palace pillar and fires its own four transformations. This is why the same person has visibly different luck in different decades.

流年四化Annual layer

The current year’s stem transforms four stars again. Annual effects are lighter than natal ones but timely: they mark which domains this particular year activates.

One rule earns special attention. Hua Ji burdens the palace it lands in, and it also strikes the palace directly opposite, a mechanic called 冲. A natal Ji in the Property Palace therefore unsettles the Children Palace across the wheel as well. When people say a chart reading feels uncannily specific, this double action is usually the reason.
