Zi Wei Dou Shu (紫微斗数), often called Purple Star Astrology, is a classical Chinese system for reading a life. It takes your birth date and hour, converts them to the lunar calendar, and plots a fixed wheel of twelve palaces. More than a hundred stars land across those palaces, each one a symbolic point calculated by rule, not a physical object in the sky.
Every palace governs one domain of life: self, siblings, marriage, children, money, health, movement, friends, career, property, inner life, and parents. The stars sitting in each palace, and the way palaces answer one another across the wheel, describe both character and circumstance.
What sets ZWDS apart from Western astrology is timing. The chart does not stay still. Every ten years a new decade palace takes charge of the period, and every year an annual palace overlays the wheel. The same natal stars get re-activated in new combinations, which is why practitioners use ZWDS to ask not only what tends to happen, but when.

The Four Transformations (四化) are the moving parts of ZWDS. Each heavenly stem, whether it comes from your birth year, a decade, or the current year, transforms four specific stars. The same chart therefore keeps changing emphasis throughout life, which is what makes forecasting possible.

The knot and the lesson
Hua Ji marks hunger, obstruction, and the theme you cannot put down. It also strikes across the wheel at its opposite palace. Read as a teacher, it shows exactly where the work of the life is.

One detail matters more than most beginners expect: Hua Ji does not only weigh on its own palace. It clashes (冲) the palace directly opposite, unsettling that domain too. A Ji in the Property Palace, for example, sends its tremor into the Children Palace across the wheel.
A palace is never read alone. Classical method reads every palace through four positions at once, a frame called San Fang Si Zheng (三方四正). This is the single most important idea separating a real reading from a star-by-star horoscope.
